Why give?
We give because God first gave to us. It’s worth remembering this. It’s the ultimate motivation behind what we do. Whether we’re giving to the poor, giving to missionaries, or giving to make our church happen, we are motivated by God’s generosity to us. If we’re motivated by God’s generosity, we’ll be cheerful whilst we give.
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.
2 Corinthians 8:9
Biblical principles to think through:
- Deliberate. How much we give is to be thought out and planned.
- Generous. How much we give is to reflect God’s character in wanting to bless abundantly.
- Sacrificial. How much we give is to cost us and not be trifling.
- Always with cheerfulness.

Each one of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
