Bernie had a previous career in engineering management, but now he loves working with people from overseas and helping them to trust in Jesus. His deep delight is watching them grow in their love for Jesus and for their neighbours.
After migrating from Malaysia to Sydney as a teenager, Bernie visited a local church and was struck by how welcoming and loving Christians were. This led him to find out more about Jesus, and ultimately to place his trust in him, being eternally grateful for God’s gracious mercy.
While in Sydney, Bernie studied and acquired a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelor of Divinity. He also married Jennie (who was born in Singapore), and they have two Sydney-born sons. A truly multicultural family (which now includes their sock-loving dog, Snoopy)!
Bernie’s a bit of a risk taker—abseiling face-first down a cliff isn’t everyone’s idea of fun—and he can’t resist imitating people’s accents! In his spare time Bernie enjoys hanging out with his family outdoors, and visiting awesome eateries. His list of favourite foods seems endless: laksa, beef vindaloo, lamb yiros, Korean BBQ, spicy ramen, giant schnitzels, succulent steaks, quarter pounders … and anything from Muratti Cakes or Eggless Dessert Cafe. Just as well he’s a keen tennis player (and a fan of Roger Federer)!
